Lunch Lab: Who Should Own Our Housing?

Lunch Lab: Who Should Own Our Housing?

From the organizers, People’s Economy Lab:

Event description: At People’s Economy Lab, we envision an economy where everyone has an affordable place to live. We’re also working toward a future where there is no racial wealth gap. But what’s the best way to reach both of those goals?

In our current economy, privately owning a home is one of the clearest paths toward financial stability and building wealth for generations. And yet, public, social, and cooperatively owned housing offer the potential for permanent affordability and wealth that accrues to the whole community.

As leaders in building a more just economy, and as people taking care of ourselves and our families, what should we put our resources behind? How do we navigate the contradictions of private asset building to close the racial wealth gap now and our long-term vision of an economy where housing is secure for everyone?

Join us on Zoom on July 17, 12-1pm, for a Lunch Lab exploring this topic. You'll hear from guest speakers Tiffani McCoy, the Interim CEO of Seattle Social Housing Developer, and Pearl Nelson, a housing associate at Homestead Community Land Trust.

AORTA training: Crash Course on Facilitating Disagreement

This Crash Course on Facilitating Disagreement from AORTA is a 2 hour online training that offers practical meeting tools to surface differences early, cut through the tension, and carve out a path forward.

COO All-Partner Convening (For Currently Funded Partners)

Registration is now open for this June’s COO All-Partner Convening! This year’s convening is designed to bring together organizations, coalitions and partnership groups working to build power and create greater equity through policy, systems, and environmental changes (PSE change) across the COO partner network.

As in years past, these convenings are an opportunity for partners from across the COO network to:

  • Share space, stories, wisdom, and expertise;

  • Build connections that support an ecosystem of systems & policy change work and community power building;

  • And, strengthen collective capacity to uplift our stories of impact and meaningful change.

This year we will come together to strengthen the capacity and infrastructure for sharing stories of collective impact – and the many ways that you all have built community power and impacted communities across King County for greater health, economic opportunity, affordable housing, and civic leadership. This year’s convening sessions will build upon the connections and knowledge shared at the cohort gatherings.

Our funded partners will get an invitation and registration link from their Program Managers. Please contact us at info@coopartnerships.org if you have questions.

Consumer Cooperative Management Association Annual Conference

A Cascade of Cooperation: Building Community Power in a Time of Change

CCMA (Consumer Cooperative Management Association) is the national annual conference for food cooperative directors, management, staff, and sector allies. The CCMA conference is organized by the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives with assistance from a planning committee comprised of co-op managers and board members, representatives from cooperative associations, development organizations, financial partners and other various allies.

Local Hosts: University of Washington Center for Cooperatives, in partnership with Central Co-op and Washington’s co-op community

We are in a moment of transition—one that calls for creativity and collaboration. Economic shifts, social change, and environmental challenges invite us to imagine new ways of working together. A Cascade of Cooperation celebrates how cooperatives, grounded in democratic ownership, spark positive change and strengthen communities through the ripple effects of collective action.

When cooperatives join forces, their impact grows—supporting resilient food systems, keeping wealth rooted locally, and advancing community well-being. As relationships deepen and leadership is shared, communities gain the ability to keep resources close to home, amplify diverse voices, and create solutions informed by lived experience.

CCMA 2026 invites food co-op leaders to come together to explore how cooperation creates lasting, cascading impact. Through learning, connection, and collaboration, we’ll share strategies for turning shared values into collective power—so that in times of change, communities don’t just adapt, they thrive.

BelRed Walking Tour: Exploring Code Opportunities for Housing

BelRed Walking Tour: Exploring Code Opportunities for Housing

From the organizer, Housing Development Consortium:

The BelRed neighborhood in Bellevue represents one of the biggest opportunities for housing in King County over the coming decades. With access to two new light rail stops and a robust existing arts and business community, the City of Bellevue is working to update the existing land use code to reflect changing conditions, remove development barriers, and add robust capacity for new housing and jobs. The growth in BelRed is expected to result in 23% of total housing target and 20% of the total job target for entire City of Bellevue in the current planning cycle. We want this land use code update to succeed and realize the Comprehensive Plan vision for this dynamic up-and-coming neighborhood.

Join HDC and our host, Charlie Bauman of GT Capital LLC, for an in-person walking tour on Thursday, 5/21 @ 9 AM to learn hands on about the many issues impacting housing and affordable housing development in the BelRed code. As the city continues to work on early code drafts and the update process gets started in the Planning Commission, we want to equip affordable housing supporters to understand the many elements of this dynamic new neighborhood, including: street grid networks, streams and critical areas, updates building heights and densities, the amenity incentive and affordable housing programs, and more.

Parking is available at the D'Angelo's of Bellevue. For questions, please reach out to Brady Nordstrom. More information: BelRed Walking Tour: Exploring Code Opportunities for Housing

Note: Please verify the meeting time with HDC.

Eastside Conversations: Inclusive Budgeting for Affordable Housing

From the organizer:

The Eastside Housing Equity Coalition invites you to join us for our event “Eastside Conversations: Inclusive Budgeting for Affordable Housing” on Wednesday, 5/20 at 11:30 AM to discuss the upcoming biennial budgets and how we, together, can truly prioritize affordable housing and community needs throughout this process. This event is targeted at city staff that work on budgets and housing policies, local elected and appointed leaders, and policymakers as well as affordable housing providers, community members, advocates, and community-based organizations.

At this event, we will:

  • Set the table with broad context about what biennial budgets are and why they are important. Include an outline of how people can share their voice in budget processes happening in Bellevue, Kirkland, and Redmond.

  • Dialogue around how decision-makers can be more effective in engaging their communities to understand the need and priorities in the community especially as those relate to funding affordable housing capital, human services; operations, maintenance, & services (OMS); and community-based organization capacity and partnerships.

  • Co-create inclusive budget processes and strategies to deepen understanding between decision-makers, affordable housing providers, and community members.
