Join the Ethiopian Community of Seattle for a powerful morning forum centering immigrant and refugee voices in the movement for housing justice and equitable development. This event will explore the intersection of cultural identity, affordability, and community driven solutions to displacement and economic insecurity. Through storytelling, panel discussions, and partner reflections, attendees will hear directly from community members, housing organizations, and public agencies working to advance housing access and opportunity. The event is free and open to the public, and will conclude with a shared lunch and space for continued conversation. Light Refreshments offered between 9:00 AM - 9:30 AM.

The “Housing Justice & Community” forum will begin with opening messages from the Executive Director of the Ethiopian Community of Seattle (ECS) Sophia Benalfew, the Board President of ECS and Federal Way City Councilmember Lydia Assefa-Dawson, and Tsega Desta ECS’s Program and Housing Director. And the program will continue to hear powerful messages and remarks from:

  • The Office of Congressman Adam Smith

  • Senator Rebecca Saldana

  • Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck

  • The Office of Seattle Councilmember Mark Solomon

The Program will continue with two dynamic panel discussions:

PANEL 1: Housing and Community Resilience, highlighting the work of community based developers serving immigrant, refugee and BIPOC communities across the region. Panelist include:

PRESENTATION: Tsega Desta (Program and Housing Director at ECS) will present on Ethiopian Community of Seattle’s long-term vision for housing and economic empowerment. This presentation will highlight ECS’s development goals, community centered design priorities, and broader strategies to ensure economic sustainability for Ethiopian and immigrant families in South Seattle. The session will also include powerful testimonies from community members, sharing stories of housing challenges, resilience, and hope.

PANEL 2: Government & Public Investment Partnerships, will feature leaders from key government departments and funding initiatives to explore resources and policies supporting equitable housing development. Panelists include:

The King County Council will host its annual educational panel discussion for Women’s History Month. The purpose of the event is to bring people together to explore, share and honor women’s history. This year's theme is Moving forward together! Women educating and inspiring generations, which will be an opportunity to celebrate the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership. Councilmembers will also present the second annual Jeanne Kohl-Welles Women Uplifting Women Award.

  • Tuesday, March 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. King County Chinook Building, Rooms 121/123, 401 5th Avenue, Seattle.

This event will be live streamed by King County TV beginning at 11:30 a.m. This event is co-sponsored by Councilmembers Claudia Balducci, Teresa Mosqueda, Sarah Perry, and Dae Shogren, Director of the Legislative Branch Equity and Social Justice Team. The presentation is open to all King County employees and the public. The first 30 minutes are set aside for informal mingling, which will be a meet and greet with light snacks. The panel discussion will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., and the award will be presented at 12:40 p.m.

The panelists sharing their experiences this year are:

Join us at HHAD in Olympia on March 14, 2025 from 10am to 4pm.

What to expect during #HHAD2025:

  • The red scarves are back! Join us to rally on the capitol steps, express your support throughout the campus, and especially in your lawmaker meetings. Wear your red scarf for housing justice! Come and get yours at registration!

  • Build people power with advocates in your district and throughout the state.  

  • Share your story with lawmakers and other stakeholders.  

  • Develop and strengthen your advocacy skills through attending workshops.  

  • Take action around this year's bold legislative agenda by registering today!

Transportation Grants
Transportation assistance is available for groups bringing advocates to Olympia for Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day on March 14!

Apply by Feb 3 at https://bit.ly/hhadtransportationgrant.

Anyone is welcome to apply. Funds are limited (we have $3,000 total to award), and we will prioritize groups bringing advocates from parts of the state with less representation at HHAD and those who have lived experience with housing insecurity.

We expect to get back to everyone within a few days of the application deadline to let you know if we can offer transportation funds.

Language interpretation is available for HHAD. Please let us know what language you need interpretation in when you fill out the registration form, or email Duaa-Rahemaah Hunter at duaarahemaahh@wliha.org.
