King County Equitable Development Initiative Coalition
The King County Equitable Development Initiative (KCEDI) Coalition, led by the Multicultural Community Coalition and Puget Sound Sage, is a partnership of over 40 BIPOC-led organizations, working to end displacement and expand community ownership of land across King County. A core team of BIPOC-led organizations is working to ensure that communities most harmed by displacement – low-income communities, renters, immigrants, refugees, and communities of color – have the power and resources to shape development in their neighborhoods and stay rooted in place.
The KCEDI Coalition advances a vision of equitable development in which communities most impacted by displacement permanently own and steward land, repair historic harm, and create stable, culturally rooted neighborhoods that support long-term health, well-being, and intergenerational resilience.
The KCEDI Coalition successfully advocated for the passing of King County Motion 16062 which set up a community rooted process to establish the KC EDI program. The coalition advocated for funding in two budget rounds to implement the program. Additionally, the KCEDI coalition successfully advocated for the passing of WA SB 5138, a bill that makes AIRBNB/short-term lodging tax a flexible revenue source that can fund equitable development in the future.
What they will do:
With this grant funding, KCEDI will deepen its internal coalition infrastructure, by creating leadership development pathways for coalition members to:
Take on additional responsibilities,
Revisit and strengthen shared agreements around conflict resolution and decision-making, and
Create intentional space for joy, celebration, and relationship-building - recognizing that these practices are central to sustaining the work to end displacement.
Additionally, they will launch a participatory research process to hear directly from impacted community members about the drivers of displacement across the County. This will inform a County-level report that will support advocacy to advance equitable development at scale and advance community stewardship of land as a path toward long-term stability and intergenerational resilience.
