A grandchild and student of the Black Power Era, Dr. Aziz believes we need a vast toolkit to get free, from gardening to martial arts to therapy. They are currently an Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Gender Studies at the University of Washington.

Dr. Aziz teaches groundbreaking courses like “Self-Defense and (Auto)Biography” and “Martial Arts and Social Justice” as well as free community safety classes. Because of this, they became the most junior tenure track faculty to win one of the university’s highest honors, its Distinguished Teaching Award, in 2024.
