New VSHSL funding opportunity: Veteran Provider Training Supports (SS 5)

new funding opportunity is available from the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) to provide trainings and cultural competency to the veteran-serving community on key issues that affect veterans, military servicemembers, and their respective families or that strengthen the ability of entities to be inclusive and welcoming of veterans, servicemembers, and their respective families.

Effectively serving veterans requires specialized understanding of veteran culture, military norms, and a host of circumstances, conditions, and systems that are specific to veterans, servicemembers, and their respective families. Many VSHSL-funded providers are of insufficient size or scale to affordably host or pursue expert trainings without additional resources.

Funding overview

Funded entities will provide trainings on topics to be determined by DCHS to the military and veteran provider community. The goal of such trainings is to enable providers to serve veterans, military servicemembers, and their respective families more effectively.

This funding opportunity will prioritize funding entities that have a demonstrated history of veteran cultural competency and can prioritize providing trainings to organizations in King County that serve veterans, servicemembers, and their families. The focus of such trainings should be related to culturally relevant service provision, knowledge of veteran resources in the community, and common issues specific to the veteran community that providers may encounter.

Awarded entities will develop and/or provide access to a range of training and professional development opportunities to community members, employers, and veterans themselves, with trainings to be centered on the veteran experience. Trainings may focus on issues of motivational interviewing, trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and their impacts or other areas of knowledge identified by participants to be of value to help them better serve the veterans with whom they interact.
